““I have an idea that some men are born out of their due place. Accident has cast them amid certain surroundings, but they have always a nostalgia for a home they know not. They are strangers in their birthplace, and the leafy lanes they have known from childhood or the populous streets in which they have played, remain but a place of passage. They may spend their whole lives...

Student: Why do they call me, “Hamie?”
Me: “Hamie?”
Student: Yes, “Hamie.”
Me: Oh you mean “Homie.” That means “Friend.”
Student: Oh really? I didn’t know that. *has a great big smile on his face*

Field Trip Today for Work
I went to LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) for a class field trip. It was my first time ever there. It reminded me of the Louvre on a much smaller scale, but still good. They also had an Aztec and Mayan exhibit. It’s crazy to think how long some of these pieces have been around. History is older than humanity. We also had lunch at the park near the La Brea Tar Pits. Two check marks...

Hello 2012!
Looks like it’s time to get the ball rolling with the first speaking engagement of the year!
I’m happy and feel very fortunate to say that myself, allisantos along with Pearl Girls Productions, will be conducting a workshop at The 27th Annual Asian Pacific American Awareness Conference (APAAC) at the University of California, Irvine.
We’ll be talking about “That’s...

Pet Peeve: Rant
I really really hate raps done slow and a capella and tried to be passed off as spoken word. If that were the case, I’d just rap all the verses I’ve ever done on tracks and call those spoken word pieces. For me, that would be unfair to the art of spoken word poetry. I write raps. I write spoken word poetry. There is a difference between my raps and my spoken word poetry in that the...

(via Psychology Today’s recent cover story, “Are You With the Right Mate?”)
“…Romance itself seeds the eventual belief that we have chosen the wrong partner. The early stage of a relationship, most marked by intense attraction and infatuation, is in many ways akin to cocaine intoxication,…

“Tahooooo!”
One of my favorite foods while in the Philippines, taho. Masarap! This was like the second day of our vacation. This video was taken at the house where it all began for the Martin Family in Las Pinas.

From adobo to turon — the best bites to be savored around the archipelago
Filipino food may not be as famous as that of its Thai and Vietnamese neighbors. But with more than 7,000 islands and a colorful history, this archipelago has some delicious dishes of its own.
Blessed with an abundance of seafood, tropical fruits and creative cooks, there’s more to Filipino dishes than...

I have eaten most of the food listed in the article but there were other foods that are still unfamiliar to me. I want to try those foods this year like the Kamaro and Batute. But here are some of the foods that I already tried.

Chicken Inasal from Bacolod Chicken House
Bulalo from Rose & Grace in Batangas

Reminder
People are supposed to make mistakes. That is why we all carry flaws, such as scars, blemishes, and ones not even visible. This isn’t exactly a bad thing.
We make mistakes to learn from them. We carry flaws to learn how to embrace them. Making mistakes and carrying flaws make us human, and ultimately, a better person at the end of the day.

Some Resolutions
Gain 15 lbs. (I weigh 127 lbs. right now.)
Learn how to fluently speak Tagalog.
Study and take the GRE by March 2012.
Apply to graduate schools for an MSW.
If I think of any more, I will be sure to update this list even if it’s late into the year because, unless I’m dead, it’s never too late to start working toward a goal.

Last Day
Tomorrow I am going to leave not only the Philippines, but my family here in the homeland. Undoubtedly, I am very proud to be a Martin and a Gana. During my stay, I was able to get a lot closer to both sides. I am going to miss it so much! Maraming salamat to everyone who opened their homes to us, reminding me that I will always have a home here in the Philippines.
I really hope to come back...
